Current supply shortage of Orgaran - a letter from Organon Laboratories Ltd.

Re: Supply of Orgaran (danaparoid sodium) in the UK

Due to technical difficulties arising during the manufacturing process for Orgaran, Europe is experiencing a shortage in supply of this product. In order to minimize the impact on patients we are working closely with Durbin PLC* to effectively manage the existing stock.

We would therefore politely request you advise your medical colleagues of the current situation and work with them to ensure the most appropriate use of Orgaran within your trust.

  • Orgaran, as per the SmPC, is licensed for the treatment of thrombo-embolic disorders in patients who require urgent parenteral anti-coagulation because of the development or history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). It is also licensed for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis and its possible consequences in patients undergoing general or orthopaedic surgery.

  • In the case of HIT, whilst these cases are invariably emergencies, given the current stock situation we would ask that you encourage your medical colleagues to consider reserving Orgaran for those cases where no alternative therapy can be used.

  • An alternative treatment for HIT type II is LEPIRUDIN a product manufactured by Pharmion under the trade name Refludan.

  • We would also ask that you communicate to your medical colleagues the need to carefully consider if alternative treatments to Orgaran could be used in non-HIT cases.

We very much appreciate your help and support in this matter and I am sure that by working together we can ensure that the existing stock of Orgaran will benefit the most appropriate patients.

*Durbin PLC supplies Orgaran exclusively to healthcare professionals in the UK
