Leslie Morgan, Managing Director of Durbin PLC
A pharmacist for 32 years, Leslie Morgan bought Durbin PLC in 1999 and has built the London business into a successful exporter and importer of medicines and healthcare supplies.
Since 2000, the company's exports have more than doubled, with customers in 150 countries.
Morgan, 54, insists payment is received in advance where possible from overseas clients and he urges other entrepreneurs to make sure they do not lose out financially if they buy products in one currency and sell in another.
Durbin's strength lies in dispatching medical products to most countries within 24 hours. "We fast-track airport security so products can be booked last minute on to planes - this saves time and lives because pharmaceutical products arrive where they are needed much quicker."
Durbin does not employ agents or appoint sole distributors in any overseas territory. It prefers to raise its profile using networking events and international trade shows, such as Arab Health, held in Dubai each January. Morgan also writes a regular column for the trade magazine Middle East Health.
The firm's 77 UK workers speak 14 languages between them. New technology, meanwhile, has improved their stock control and management of international orders, 60% of which are shipped the same day they are received.
